Just out of interest I tried to update my Win XP SP3 this morning and it couldn't connect with the Microsoft web page.
I put the given error number into Google and followed one of the leads which suggested that it could be my firewall which was stopping the connection.
I stopped the firewall and started the update session again which went ahead OK to the tune of 90 update files. This took over an hour to download and install and everything looks OK so far.
