UK BT master telephone socket wiring
5 Answers
Hi,
I have recently moved to the UK and have signed up to a telephone and broadband service provider who is unwilling to send an engineer to my property for free (despite initially promising me this).
I would like to know if the wiring is currently correct in my telephone.
Having unscrewed the bottom and top halves of the phone socket unit I can see the following:
1) In the top half/rear part of the socket:
a) A white wire with blue stripes connected to a screw labelled A
b) A blue wire with white stripes connected to a screw labelled B
2) In the bottom half/front of the socket:
a) The usual telephone socket which allows connections to telephone equipment
b) A test telephone socket
c) 6 connectors, numbered 1 to 6, none of which have wires connected to them
3) Behind the sockets altogether, in the small wall cavity, there is a bunch of 4 wires that have been bunched together for what looks like tidiness. These are coloured:
a) white with orange stripes
b) orange with white stripes
c) white with green stripes
d) green with white stripes (although further down this looks (c))
I currently have no ring tone. My service provider tells me there is nothing wrong with the line into the property.
Given the information above, can anyone please tell me what I need to do to get a ring tone?
Thanks in advance.

The bottom half is for connecting internal phone extensions. even if there is nothing connected to this part the main socket should still work.
Plug the phone into the test socket visible when you remove the bottom part of the master socket, if you are still getting no dial tone then it becomes the phone companies responsibility and you should call them out.
(welcome to the UK BTW)

If you plug a (known to be working) corded phone handset into the test socket (visible with the bottom half of the socket removed) and there is no dial tone then it is the responsibility of the company you pay the line rental to.
They will either fix it themselves or pass the job to BT Openreach who own/maintain the physical connection to your house.
