I read or saw something which said that the terms 'vampire' and 'Dracula' sprang from the days of Vlad the Impaler, who lived in Transylvania and used to impale 'surprisingly' his victims to bleed to death. Think it was a TV documentary now, thinking about it. There's probably loads on the net somewhere ...
The first Vampire legends date back way further than Dracula, who was only 15th century.
These legends are trully ancient and date back as far as the Ancient Egyptians with the Goddess Sekhmet drinking a river of blood.
Also, in biblical mythology, the first wife of Adam was Lilith, not Eve. Lilith is reguarded as the mother of all Vampires in many Vampiric cults in this day.
Most agree that the ealiest legends were a mixture of the two, or perhaps even an older Goddess that has been lost in time.

I was recently told about a Danish diplomat in Austria of all places in the 17th century (I think). He send home stories about a vampire on the loose. Not that this is some sort of creation story, but it shows that apparently some took the vampire stories relatively seriously at that time in Austria :)
