London cycle fatality

This is not the first cycle fatality and it certainly won't be the last, but should the authorties now take this opportunity to tighten up on cyclists?

Perhaps they should take on board some of Bradley Wiggins suggestions ie the compulsory wearing of crash helmets, the fitting of lights, and making it illegal to listen to iPods and phones etc while riding?

Should it be compulsory?. Probably not. Ultimately it's your brain, and you should protect it (or not) how you see fit.
I'm not sure why we don't allow the same choice to motorcyclists and motorists re seat belts. Probably because there were so many people ending up in hospital with gruesome but avoidable injuries, it was causing a noticable drain on NHS resources.

Perhaps they are made by the same firm that make military helmets that are not designed to stop a bullet fired directly at them.

I'm told by a policeman friend that many fatalities among cyclists are not caused by being run over by a vehicle, but by being knocked off their bikes and smashing their heads on roads and pavements. Common sense says that helmets must offer some protection.

I was driving through Glencoe earlier this week and the cyclists were a downright liability. The road is very narrow and twisting with a lot of steep hills, and overtaking is practically impossible. At many points I was struggling to keep the car going forward since I had to go so slowly up steep inclines behind cyclists. And of course there is always someone in the queue of traffic who does not want to wait and overtakes in dangerous conditions, putting everyone at risk. Yes, I know that is the driver's fault - but it is a situation which wouldn't arise if cyclists were a little more sensible about where they choose to cycle. It's not like they were trying to get from A to B cos the area is pretty much uninhabited.
