Exchange rates

We don't go on holiday until the last week of September and I noticed today when I was shopping that in some travel shops the exchange rate is €1.27 to the £1. Does any one know from past experience if I should buy now or wait til nearer the holiday in case the rate goes up.

Exchange rates are very hard to predict. Were I in your position, I'd be tempted to buy now at that rate. Look out for commisson rates on the high exchange rates, we usually ask What will I get for £500 and judge from there.

If you go on XE`s historical charts you can see that the pound is getting stronger against the euro (or more likely the euro is getting weaker)! I doubt it will change by more than a couple of pence but I can`t see you losing out by waiting a bit longer.

You can also order from people like Thomas Cook online and pay cash in-store when you pick them up. That way you avoid the bank charges that some banks add on when you pay using your debit card and by ordering online you also get a better rate than by just going in-store and buying them.

TBH unless you are taking thousands and thousands on holiday, a slight change in rate wont make ALL that much difference (perhaps enough for a bottle of wine)

Also i think I am correct that if you pay by card then your bank will see it as a foriegn transaction and you will get charged even if its a debit card

You were correct, but nearly all banks have recently stopped doing this and the remaining few will be changing soon.

I'm surprised you can get 1.27 in a travel shop - that's today's mid market rate so unless it's changed from yesterday when you posted anyone offering that is losing money.

You can get quite close, yes, in some places but most are nowhere near.

Try not to change money at the airport with only afew exceptions the rate is usualy poor.

Tesco bank online is the best rate of exchange. We go away 3x a year and always use this site. I compare it with all the high street shops but nobody beats Tesco
