I have a computer with an internal modem with its own speaker. Can I switch off the speaker or down the volume so I can't hear the modem ringing when I log on to the internet?

Can't remember exactly, but when I had a dialup modem it had a volume control in the 'properties' tag.
It's usually under Start > Settings > Control Panel > Modems > {whichever modem}
If that doesn't seem to work, then open up your modem properties box (for me, this is Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems tab > (select modem name from list) > Properties). Click on the Advanced tab and below where it says "Extra initialization commands" type "M0" (without quotes). Don't ask me why this works...but if nothing else will stop the modem noise, this will.
Can I suggest this? In the Control Box d/cklick Modems. Under the General tab click Properties and you'll find a slider control.
