Don't know its origin but found a reference on, www.kidssportnet.com/general/dec92/calendar.htm

it's just may day.

We used to say "a pinch and a punch for the first of the month".

Not sure why.

and the reply is something like " a slap and a kick for being so quick" !
My mum and aunt grew up in Portsmouth in the 40s and 50s and they still say "first of May, kick-bum day" every year. When we were kids there was an accompanying friendly knee to the bum.
