The orbit of the Earth around the Sun is not quite circular; it is slightly elliptical. The furthest it gets is 94,509,900 miles and the closest it gets is 91,427,200 miles. The time when it is closest is c.5th January each year.

The Earths orbit is not slightly elliptical; it is elliptical. The Sun is at one of the focii of the ellipse (the focii being about 3 million miles apart[difference in the figures in bernardo's answer]). Found this animated diagram that shows the mechanics as governed by Kepler's 3 laws of celestial motion.
