Hubby chopped this annoying bush down but cannot get the roots out. There is about a foot of stump left that is about 5 inches thick.Should he just leave it,or is it best to get something to kill it off.Sorry I don't know the name of the bush, but it was about 6 foot tall with variegated leaves that where always there come rain or shine(or snow and frost)
Any advice welcome
Thanks

It depends what the plant was. Anything like willow or elderberry will just shoot back up again.

Personally, i'd make a cross in the top of the stump with a saw, get some neat roundup and mix it 50/50 with water. maybe add another 25% diesel and pour onto the cross. Do this for a couple of days and it should do it a treat.

Worked for me.

Well sine we have a diesel car I think we may try that.No surrounding plants to worry about even though it was nowhere near as pretty as a willow or useful as elderberry.
Roundup can go on the shopping list!
Thanks

If you drill a fewe holes quite deep into stump and pour the diesel it should do the trick !!
Yeah, drill holes down into the stimp works well too. I would add the roundup as this will be systemic and kill the roots too.

Thank you both, the drilling holes makes sense and should be easy.I will get Hubby onto it.
Thanks again

If you don't want to pollute the soil, and if you want to use that space for another plant, it might be better to get the stump chewed out. I had to get rid of a lot of Leylandii after moving to a new house, and I got the stumps chewed. I could use the land immediately - no trace of the stumps, though the "chewer" man told me the roots would be there still but would rot away. He was right.
