It's nonsense, that's why. You might as well say £49 +£49 +£3 = £102, which is equally nonsense. You are adding apples and oranges

You had £100: now the shopkeeper has £97 , you have £1, your dad has £1 and your brother has £1. Total £100

you are £1 up but your dad and brother are £49 down not £49 up and so the sum is

(-£49) + (-£49) + £1 = -£97 i.e. you are down $97 between the 3 of you (and that £97 is now owned by the shop)

(either that's a typo $ instead of £ or the exchange rate has changed drastically)

If the trainers were £97, then your dad and brother spent £48.50 each and should have received £1.50 each in change making up the £100. You cheekily kept £1 for yourself so that increased what your dad and brother spent to £49 each plus they received £1 each change. So £49 x 2 + £2 change, makes more sense.
