I used to work with a guy who has been blind since birth but is an excellent skier. He had a sighted guide who skied with him giving him directions (he later married her). His sense of hearing was so acute he could recognise people by the way they walked even in a busy pub! He was also a very good programmer in the days when we used reams of 'music score' print-outs in COBOL, somehow managing to keep track of the program thread when the rest of us relied on fingers, pencils, rulers etc to keep track.
