The driving examiner turned to congratulate his learner on a fine emergency stop. But Julia Carling wasn't listening.
She was too busy gaping through the windscreen at the woman she had almost run down - her own mother.
Julia, presenter of the new BBC1 car maintenance show Where's The Jack?, says: "It was my second driving test and I was determined to pass.
"My instructor was sitting stern-faced next to me and I was driving along, waiting for him to tell me to do my emergency stop."
At that moment her mum appeared in the middle of a zebra crossing - and Julia screeched to a halt within inches of her.
"She had loaned me her car for the test and was rushing round nearby getting some shopping so she could come and pick me up.
"She looked at me in horror - and I looked back at her in horror. But I didn't own up to the examiner that I'd nearly run my mother over. I thought he might have failed me."
Julia was amazed
