I see a car on a forecourt that I like the look of, my car is worth a little bit more than the one I see, say £500-£1000 more, How does that work with the part-exchange bit? would they do a straight swap? Or would they offer to buy mine a lot less and I pay the difference? (which I wouldn't). Or would they be paying me the difference? (I doubt it)

Mine is a vauxhall and the one I have seen is a Ford.

They'd probably look in Glass's Guide and see how much the second hand Vauxhall is worth, and offer you that in part-exchange.

I think you may be better of buying the car that you fancy no px and get a discount, and then sell your Vauxhall privately.

If your car is worth £500-1000 more than the car you want then the garage will probably take your car in PX and say you still have to pay £1000-2000 on top.

PX values are stupidly low, you'd be better off selling your car privately and then buying the other car.

Sell yours privately, take the cash and go in hard for an even better deal on the new car.

Never actually tried that but at a guess I'd say that as they are in the business of Selling cars, not Buying which they would be doing under those conditions....they wouldn't be interested in a "deal" with no cash involved such as a straight swap.

Who told you the value of your car..the part exchange value that is.

Only way is to get down there and ask....they might laugh you off the forecourt but on the other hand you might get a surprise...

As suspected, be better to sell privately. Been such a long time since I sold a car privately. Any tips? Re when they test drive it? do I drive? etc

Yes you drive it, unless they can prove they are insured to drive it.

If they do drive it make sure you are in the car as-well, in case they do a runner with your car.
