Hi J2PUR dont know of your postings but Sqad has informed me you are a dentist - could you please reassure me re the below-mentioned

I am suffering with very achy mouth. Have 4 crowns and 2 loose bottom teeth which causes pain if as so much cold butter hits them. Went to a private dentist last May but could not go through with what they wanted.

Take out 2 loose teeth and implant them
Dig really deep into my gums and remove plaque and I would have more pain for 6 weeks.
Shorten a crown which gives me a lot of pain too

I am not interested at all in the cosmetic business just want to be rid of pain.
I cant remember the rest but for all this treatment it was coming to £1,000 not counting £200 for consultation and examination.

At the time I was 3 weeks into nursing a broken shoulder so I figured it was all too much. Anyway can you advise me what to do next. Would you know that I had have proceeded with the above treatment would I be painfree today. It would be greatly appreciated J2PUR of an answer as I am so nervous and frightened of the dentist.

I used to be afraid of the dentist, but these days there is no need at all. I think they have given you too much information really. I'm sure if you went for it you would be fine. I've got a lot of crowns and an implant and I have no pain at all from anything. Be brave, even the injections only hurt a tiny bit because they wipe something on your gum first to numb it. Sending 'brave thoughts' to you!!

Yes, it kept breaking off at the root, so he put a post on to it and then stuck it in the gum. Just thought, though, that wasn't actually the whole of my tooth. It's all frozen when it's done, though, so even though it sounds awful, you don't know what's actually going on.
My dentist is a tall, young, blond South African who sings along to the radio, and pats my shoulder. I have a contract with Denplan and pay £25 a month for everything except the laboratory costs if I need a new crown.

Hello Connemmara

I'm happy to give you general advice, but I obviously cannot advise you on a specific treatment plan online.

The main priority of any dental treatment is to alleviate pain foremost, and then to establish health, function and aesthetics.

All dental treatment should be painless. Local anaesthetics (LA) are very safe and effective and are suitable for virtually all treaments, but in some instances a patient may also benefit from oral, inhalational or intravenous sedation. A general anaesthetic should only be used if the procedure or patient is not suitable for treatment under LA. Your dentist is the best person to advise you on this.

Some dental treatment will involve post-operative pain, discomfort and swelling as the body heals from the surgery (as with all types of surgery), and this would be explained to you before treatment.

You need to be fully informed of the treatment plan suggested, along wih the risks/benefits, possible complications, alternative treatments, the outcome of carrying out no treatment, along with costs and time-scales so that you can give 'informed consent' to the treatment

You can always obtain a second opinion from another dentist either in general or specialist practice, or be referred to a dental teaching hospital for a specialist opinion. A teaching hospital then may, or not, be able to accept you for treatment.

I realise that this is not specific advice, but hope it helps. I would go back to your dentist for another consultation and discuss your options again.

Hi sorry for calling you J2PUR as you are J9PUR. Thank you for your advice and you sure have enlightened me regards the aftercare. When I get the nerve I will contact the dentist and get him/her to explain more. I am sure that anyone reading these postings can't believe I am so nervous but I have been traumatised by the dentist from the age of 5 when I nearly bled to death from a dentist and of course through my adult hood when I had a dentist who drilled into a half up wisdom tooth and actually drilled into my gum. When I got his hand (many years ago) and let out an expletive - he left the room and came back into me and apologised. So between all that - I have been through a horrendous experience with dentists. Anyway thanks J9PUR if you can add anything more I would appreciate it - however thanks for your advice. Bye Conn

connemmara - I was at the dentist today and got a molar out. It is most painful and I went into google to see if I could find out more about the recovery time.

I have been deferring my dental appointment for about a year but although I am in a bit of pain (a lot to be honest) the treatment was not at all unpleasant and the dentist was really good. You will be very pleased with yourself once you have the treatment that you need completed.
