Programme still running

Something running on my pc is really getting on my nerves. Every so often I hear snatches of a song from an advert which must be running somewhere on my pc but I cannot find it! I've uninstalled Firefox as I hardly ever use it, am running IE9 at present. I asked a similar question to this earlier in the week, and thought that it had just been on Channel 4 OD, but now it doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, I still hear the music and chat!! It's been occuring for about 4 days on and off, so I'm hoping that someone will tell me that I can open a menu and the answer will be very simple - there's wishful thinking for you! Thanks.

am no techie, but have you shut down your pc and restarted?
Have you checked that no-one is using your internet connection for free access for themselves?

Could it be an advert on a webpage?

Running and looking at the tabs in Task Manager might help you identify possible culprits. Failing that you could try downloading & running one of the malware detecttor/cleaner programmes.

Failing that are you sure it's not all in your head ? Have a chat with the doc next time he's on ;-)

Thanks everyone, especially sir.prize for the very interesting link - I still haven't sorted it, but have a slightly better idea what I'm looking for.
Incidentally, Old_Geezer, if you have a look at the link it doesn't appear to be just me who's hearing voices!!
