Was asked very nicely into the office today. I was off one day during the week with pain in my side followed by sickness. Went to the doctors and im taking tablets and im scheduled for a blood test next week. I thought this was why i was taken into the office when i was hit with the words (Right this is an investigation; ive been getting complaints that you have been smoking cannabis out the back of the shop on your break and it has been drifting into the shop) well imagine the shock since i dont smoke cannabis. Does anyone know what i can do about this?

did they suspend you on full pay pending the investigation process to establish the facts from any witnesses and for you to be interviewed and notes taken to enable the investigator to decide whether it should go to a disciplinary hearing?
if not they have not followed a proper procedure as it is a seriosu accusation which if unfounded you must challenge and...

Cannabis stays in the system for a while.
plus it stinks, but actually some of those herbal ciggies can smell rank, how do they know that the smell was canabis anyway?

Random question, drugs wise would you pass a general drugs screen? Just a thought as you said you didn't smoke cannabis rather than a general don't do any drugs, I'm not accusing as probably just the turn of phrase but it could put a twist on the testing idea.

How long have you worked there?
if you smoke one or two spliffs, it can be detected in urine for up to 10 days. however, if yu do it daily/heavily, you are talking 30 days.

homes its supposed to be 28 days, but everyone is different.
'Was asked very nicely into the office today'.
Are you not usually asked nicely into the office?

'I thought this was why i was taken into the office'
I thought you were asked nicely, not 'taken'

'ive been getting complaints that you have been smoking cannabis out the back of the shop on your break and it has been drifting into the shop'
This sounds like more than one person may have complained.

'i dont smoke cannabis'
Do you smoke/anything herbal?

I would expect a suspension on full pay. I would ask them to let the company doctor conduct a drug test. I would not go off on my own and do it. If they simply sack you and take someone elses/others word, go to a tribunal.
as I understand it some drugs can remain in your system for up to 3 weeks.
Did they suspend you?
Were you told that you could have someone present during the interview?
Have you been given a date to return?
can you give us an update?

@methyl - I was a regional union rep for several years. I wouldn't advise anyone to do what you have said.

''Get the letter signed by a responsible person who knows you well (ideally your doctor, but a good friend will do)''
This is like asking your doctor or a friend to write down that you do not have firearms in your house or that you do not shoplift. How do they know for sure? Would you commit yourself by stating in writing that one of your friends hasn't done something (ie never used crack cocaine)?

If boabauld is innocent and has not smoked cannabis, they should put it in their employers hand to prove it.

By boabauld saying they commit to the company doctor to do drugs testing would certainly make them think twice as to the guilt. If they do the test and it comes back negative, they will trust and respect boabauld more than those that reported them. That would be the positive outcome.
^^^^^ As a union rep and branch officer for many years i would strongly agree with the above post, the onus is on the employer to prove their case.
Getting a mate to write a letter is ,imo, stupid and will only blur the issue.
Any good rep would drive a coach and horses through the case as presented.
