Audi A3

I'm thinking of buying a second hand Audi A3 (not sure what year). Any advice on which size engine/fuel type/any good points/bad points would be gratefully received.

My best advice would be buy a Mk4 Golf and pocket the difference, (the A3 is the same car in a posh frock), or spend it on a VW handling kit for the Golf. The A3 is not a sporty drive at all, the S3 is fast, but not that involving or good handling. The 1.8T Sport quattro would probably be my choice, or perhaps the frugal, quiet TDi. They do hold their value well, and are well built, so it will last, but they are just too expensive for what they are, IMO.

Or, go find a used Skoda Octavia vRS. Same chassis, same drive-train, cheaper and possibly better built.
