LEAVING EARLY
36 Answers
My son has just got a 12 week job with tesco after a prolonged period of unemployment and he is over the moon. He will be working afternoons and his shift ends at 6.30pm, however his last bus leaves at 6.35 and he will need at least 10mins to get to his stop. He is now stressing that he will lose the job when he tells the that he will need to leave 5 mins early although he is happy to start earlier (15 mins if necessary) to make up for it. What is their reaction likely to be please.

Not sure which side of the border you're on but in Norfolk we have the Kickstart programme which loans mopeds to people who need to get to work, college etc http://kickstart.btck.co.uk/
If you would prefer talking to them they "have a team of experienced staff waiting to take your call on 01362 699923"
If you're not in Norfolk perhaps a similar scheme exists in your county; they are usually most active in rural areas.

I read further and found this on the Kickstart site:
Provided applicants meet certain qualifying conditions, Kickstart can provide moped and scooter loans across Norfolk, and parts of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.
Suffolk – We cover North Suffolk only, includes Bury St Edmunds up to Lowestoft but not the Newmarket area.
Cambridgeshire – We cover Wisbech, the Fenland and north of (but not including) Cambridge or Huntingdon; We do not cover Peterborough.

If he has been on Jobseeker's Allowance and or ESA for at least twenty-six weeks and the job is more than sixteen hours a week, he wil receive an automatic one-off £100 payment. He does not need to claim it, it will be processed when he tells his Jobcentre or Benefit Centre he is starting work. If need be he can use some of that dosh to pay for the odd taxi if need be.
Once again thank you all for your interest, he goes in tomorrow for his induction and has decided to mention his problem but say he has a solution if they cannot help. Unfortunately his set hours are ony 15 but they have already asked him to work extra on Friday and Saturday so fingers crossed that it will lead to something permanent. I will certainly collect him for a time and if i can't there is a train he can catch an hour and a quarter after he finishes, so we will play it by ear for a time and see what happens. I will put a final message on tomorrow night to let anyone who is interested know what they say. Again thank you all for taking the time and coming up with very useful suggestions. J.
Hi quick update. He went into work today(that sounds lovely) and told personnel his problem with buses and she simply changed his hours to 15 mins earlier so he will catch last bus. Have been really stressed about fetching him every night and we are both so relieved it is all sorted now. Hoping for a good nights sleep tonight and thank you all for your interest and the kind comments - i can happily ignore the not so kind ones thank you thank you x
Good result. In my experience most employers are flexible and want to help staff - they are only people like us and they understand these issues. From some posts on AB some posters seem to feel employers are bullies and 'barstewards' out to screw us down but in my experience employers will usually work with us rather than against us if we do the same. I hope he enjoys his new career
