Actually, Joko, 'ax/aks' is an older form than 'ask' and is still common, I believe, in Lancashire. However, as you say, it does tend to jar a little on modern ears..
I can't read this post without submitting my four-penneth - what really grates at the moment is 'wi-choo' instead of 'with you' on a current charts single - AARRGGHHH!
