That should have read: if more mature people... And no, I haven't had a drop.
She was invited to look at the issue for Panorama, if you had read the piece.
Too many "Do Gooders" telling other people how to live, if you enjoy taking a drink do so, we are responsible enough for our own actions. I enjoy my wine!
I don't think she's trying to interfere with anyone's drinking habits at all.
I think Sandy means what business is it o bf anyone's rather than Joan Bakewell personally and I must admit I concur. If you can't get rat arsed in your 80's when can you?
Pity the poor old bloke who still likes to light up his pipe!
I have a friend, who recently confided in me that they don't know what to do with the Grandma.... She drinks too much whisky, and they have to check on her everyday. She's very happy, about 7 stone and eats OK. "what should I do" they said... "How old is she" I said... "94" they said Me "Just leave her" I could be wrong but If I get to that age, I would want a drink
she isn't telling people what to do if you read the piece.
My sis phoned last night as an old friend had been diagnosed with untreatable cirrhosis of the liver. Joan Bakewell has the right credentials, having fought for the rights and well being of older people. Personally, a nice glass of malt whisky is something I look forward to but I also like to keep up with that great object in my avatar when he is going uphill so it is one glass.
This reminds me of the (true) story, not so many years ago, when a man in a retirement home asked if he could have a second boiled egg for breakfast as the first one was so nice. The reply was, "No, it's bad for your cholesterol!" The said man was 97 at the time!
I eat when I'm hungry
I drink when I'm dry
And if the moonshine don't kill me
I'll live till I die
Love it Wharton.
Wharton, you forgot the cigareeets and wild wild women. Thats if I've remebered the song correctly.
As a further addition to the debate, what was not mentioned is the fact a large percentage of the older generation do have ailments which according to clinicians are untreatable because of age degenration except for the standard answer " try these stronger painkillers, they may help".
Duncer - c,mon The Blues tomorrow.
beegeebee - different song (The Moonshiner/I'm a Rambler I'm a Gambler) the theme of which is (roughly) 'mind your own business'.
She's not talking about a drink or two - I watched the programme - she's talking about elderly people drinking far too much at home, a bottle of vodka a night was quoted on the programme.
Should that be every other night instead?
Slightly off subject;
Living on the Norfolk Broads, years ago, a neighbour, a heavy drinker, had a boat called 'Sir Osis of the River'
