My dictionary says so..) it really hurts, I know I've done that so many times and I once cut when I, like you, hadn't eaten all day. Yikes I thought I was going to faint.
If you don't want to look at it, how about putting it in some soapy water when you need to clean it?
BTW an Italian man once taught me that you should never cut lettuce but rip it, someting to do with the fibres in it and it tastes better if you rip it, trust me - and you won't hurt your thumb while cutting lettuce anymore!
