What medical advice would you give for these symptons?

My mom has been ill for a couple of years now, its not constant but every few months. She gets severe head aches and dizziness to the point where she cant take a single step without toppling over and the pain in her head has drove her to be physically sick. She also gets ringing in her ears. She has been for numerous scans but the doctors are extremely uninterested and unhelpful. Obviously we are concerned about her and want to sort this out as soon as possible. At first she was diagnosed as having meniere's disease or a form of that and was given medication, unfortunately it didn't work and the doctors admitted this was a wrong diagnosis. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms before? If so, how were they resolved? Or does anyone with a medical background have any advice for us?

Hollie, interesting that you are asking for clinical advice but on your other thread, asking whether we are professionally qualified to do so! Once again, you'd get better replies if you'd posted this in the Health section under Body and Soul - but don't repost now... You say that the doctors are "uninterested and unhelpful" - well, you have two options - insist on a referral to an ENT Consultant, or change your GP, which you can do freely these days. If the doctor admits to a wrong diagnosis, surely they haven't stopped investigating for a root cause?

Not a medical expert, but my wife had similar symptoms after a very strenuous workout and was diagnosed with vertigo. Nothing to do with hights. It is caused by build up of crystals in the ear. No magic pill either. The (very expensive) doc taught her how to clear the crystals by leaning over a couch and turning her head. She still gets mild attacks but cannot work out any more.

Nothing sinister comes to mind, but the obvious diagnosis is Migraine Associated Vertigo (MAV)......Google it.

Now go back and see a proper doctor and not an internet stranger.

I get dizzy when I get migraines, and sometimes they make me vomit. I'd probably not try walking around much if I had one and just go to sleep for a few hours, that tends to sort it out.

hollie - I would go with a Vertigo Migraine - I also suffer from this, and have been hospitalised 3 times due to it. Its very distressing, my sympathies to your Mum. I take Prochlorperazine 5mg when I feel an attack coming on and try to lay still in one position, not moving my head, until the attack has subsided, this can take a few hours.
