Removing Car Window Scratches

Is it possible to remove/lessen (severe) scratches to car windows (not the windscreen)? Are there any products similar to chip filling pastes you get for windscreens or would fine sanding/polishing help?

It is possible to pollish out scratches with something like jewlers rouge, it's a dark red paste used for polishing, it will reomove the scratches but requires a lot of effort for very slow results and can leave the glass looking distorted because you are actualy wearing away the surface of the glass.
