iPlayer desktop

This problem has persisted for weeks now and I'm getting frustrated. BBC have been no help either.

My iPlayer desktop stopped functioning some weeks ago. iPlayer help FAQS revealed it to be a problem BBC were aware of and was dealing with. Then they announced it was fixed and the advice was provided to uninstall and reinstall.
But it won't reinstall. When it tries to , it says it needs Adobe AIR which will be downloaded at the same time - click YES to proceed. So I do and get the message "A download error occurred."

I have tried after ensuring I have the latest version of AIR installed and after uninstalling it - with the same results.

I frequently use iPlayer and have to resort to live streaming which often fails because of lack of bandwidth. iPlayer desktop has previously permitted me to use the service downloading the programmes for later viewing. (This is when I have forgotten to record the programme on my PVR.)

I use an HP Pavillion laptop running Windows Home Premium (64 bit) and usually Chrome browser 22 - though I have tried it with the same result using IE8, Firefox Aurora 17 and Opera (latest version - not sure of number without checking). [I have all these browsers on my machine for testing various websites I'm responsible for.]

Can anyone tell me how I can get iPlayer desktop to install properly, please?

A couple of corrections to above.
It's IE9 and Opera 12. (The latest version of everything.)
It's only Chrome that even tries to let me download iPlayer. The other browsers don't react. - Well the link pales as if it's going to do something but then comes back dark again with no action seemingly having been taken.
