can anyone explain to me how to make a cd that will play on an ordinary dvd player. I have managed to make cds which can play on my pc using windows movie maker but not sure how to make a cd or dvd which will play on a standard dvd player. I am reasonably capable with technical stuff but the various file formats are puzzling me.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.You will definitely need a program that creates VCDs. Nero and Roxio are the most popular and are usually on the majority of PCs anyway. Most people prefer Nero, but I find Roxio much more user-friendly.
(Particularly if using Roxio) You may also need something to convert any existing files into a VCD-suitable MPEG format. Nero normally does this for you, but seems to take an age (IMHO). The program I use is WinAVI, but this isn't free.
Then it's simply a question of following the "Wizards" in your CD creation program to create a VCD. (Both Nero and Roxio take you through the process step-by-step).
I have yet to come across a DVD player that won't play VCDs, though older models aren't keen on CDR/CDRWs.
