camcorder dvd or cd

can anyone explain to me how to make a cd that will play on an ordinary dvd player. I have managed to make cds which can play on my pc using windows movie maker but not sure how to make a cd or dvd which will play on a standard dvd player. I am reasonably capable with technical stuff but the various file formats are puzzling me.

It depends on which formats your DVD player will run. I have a Panasonic that will play almost anything. You need one that will play VCDs or SVCDs. A lot of the basic ones don't support these.

As Electrochem says it does depend on your recorder and what format you want, my dvd recorder a Liteon 5006 can play all formats and also burn a dvd directly from a camcorder without using a PC, have a look at this site, theres a lot of info'

You will definitely need a program that creates VCDs. Nero and Roxio are the most popular and are usually on the majority of PCs anyway. Most people prefer Nero, but I find Roxio much more user-friendly.

(Particularly if using Roxio) You may also need something to convert any existing files into a VCD-suitable MPEG format. Nero normally does this for you, but seems to take an age (IMHO). The program I use is WinAVI, but this isn't free.

Then it's simply a question of following the "Wizards" in your CD creation program to create a VCD. (Both Nero and Roxio take you through the process step-by-step).

I have yet to come across a DVD player that won't play VCDs, though older models aren't keen on CDR/CDRWs.

Thanx to all for advice I got there with Nero ( cheers LeMarchand ). I created movie with moviemaker and then used Nero to create a VCD with the windows media file whew !!!!!!!! Thanx again
