Hi Charbo. Your painting frame clue certainly leads to weasel. But if you Google double tripod with six legs, there are many instances where the answer is given as weasel. Not sure which way to go on this one.

Google 'Hexapod' it is an animal with 6 feet and I believe a framework.

Chambers dictionary describes as an animal with 6 feet; an insect. Hope that helps.
