I'm putting down some vinyl tiles/planks in my Mums hallway. The floor is wooden floorboards so it'll probably want levelling with hardboard first but would you put any insulation down too.

Yes ratty, your supposed to anyway, thickness depends on you though.
There was something similar asked recently, Ratts. I suggested that insulation is always a good idea, but even with modern foam boards, you would need at least 50mm (2") to make it worthwhile.
You then have the problem of a raised floor level... a step into the room... and maybe door shortening.
If that rules it out, then maybe consider lifting the existing boards, and insulating under them, within the floor joists.

Blimey, 2"! Thanks Builder but I was thinking more something like the foamy stuff on a roll that you put under wooden laminate flooring. Would that not be any good then? It's just little old Muggins here that has to do the work and I'm not planning on doing any major carpentry :o)

Ok Muggins............ ;o)
I know the underlay you mean, but that's really no more than a soft, flexible bed for the flooring. Its insulation value will be very small.
I guess you're going to have to go for the hardboard only ..... then the vinyl :o)
