Hi. My son has just started a photography course at college and I was wondering if anyone knows what would be a good camera for him to start with? Thanks in advance

Personally I would guess that he'll have to learn about exposure, F-stops and all that kind of thing so would have thought a digital SLR where the user has to make manual settings rather than a point and shoot fully automatic digital.
i have a Bronica ETRSi 120 roll film camera with 3 lenses, viewfinders etc- the portrait lens alone cost £1000, and you can have the whole outfit for a few hundred quid...
In Victorian times, the photographer would spend days on site, watching the light before shooting.
Any camera these days will take quality photographs,but it doesn't encourage photos with any understanding. Point.. click....

You can buy a film SLR for much less and learn about f stops , shutter speeds and the rest. Few DSLRs are able to work in a full manual mode .
You can pick up something like a Zenit B and lens for £10 or so, a very reliable camera with 1,000s of lens available. Advantage of a Zenit is that it is fully mechanical no battery at all. More modern cameras need a battery to function even on manual mode.
