Think shiny marble or granite slices about half an inch thick, three inches wide and set four around the outside of the hole that the fire is in. Two will be shorter - to make the rectangle (draw a picture, you'll get it). The hard part is persuading them to adhere permanently to the plasterwork - took my chap three goes, left it propped up with wooden offcuts while it all hardened up. Works lovely when it's done though.
Worth doing Bob. A neighbour had such a fire put in recently. The "specialists" plastered with a heat-proof plaster. It was all crazed two days later... without the fire having been on :o(

Anything like that........ or tiles if you like.

Thanks both. After further searching the only place I can get these strips cut is a granite worktop supplier. And they have quoted £90. The installation manual.states, granite or marble, or other non combustable material.
I was thinking to cut my own out of a slate slab sold by B&Q.1 slab £13
