Odd problem, tricky to describe. For Sqad?
8 Answers
As I say, I'm not sure how to describe this one, but I'll do my best. For a couple of weeks at least, the area of skin around the outside of my hip/outer thigh on one side had been feeling sort of numb when I touch it. And now, for the past two or three days, it has started to be painful in a funny sort of way. Sometimes it doesn't hurt, but at others, and more and more often, it feels as if it's been sand-papered - the best description I can give. My clothes rub on it and earlier on when I bent down to pick up something from the floor it was agony. THen, as long as I don't touch it or move so that my clothes rub, it is fine. I can't lie on that side in bed or lean that way when sitting. Otherwise it is not affected by whether I am moving or staying still. Any ideas?

Oh! dear......an accurate description, so thank you....so accurrate that i can say the following.
1) It is not serious and certainly not life threatening.
2) It is caused by entrapment of a nerve coming from lumbar plexus L2.L3 ( your back and winding around your hip)... lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh.
3) Google..... Meralgia...

4) Often associated with old age (don't know how old you are), diabetes and maybe an old spinal injury.
5) Ibuprofen 400mgms as and when necessary for the pain.
That's my lot on the subject...........feedback would be welcomed.

Thank you, Sqad. I'm 57 (is that so old?), not diabetic - blood sugar pretty low when last tested. But the back has been dodgy for a while. I first injurred it whan I was 17 on a trampoline at school and the neck also causes problems. I've googled it and one article recommends I see a doctor. Do you think I should, or should I wait it out? It has been getting worse over the last few days.
Give it another week and see how it responds to the Ibuprofen and if it settles, then there is no need to see your GP, just keep Ibuprofen handy.
However if the tablets have little effect, then see your GP.
It sounds as though the trampoline incident was the cause.
57 years old eh?.......not old......just the perfect age...;-)
