I gather there are a lot of 'Well to do' people. What I would like to know is how many 'council house kids' there are.
I was born in lodgings and moved to a new council house at the age of 18 months in 1952. Dad had a good job, was never out of work but could never afford to buy.
We now own our own home but I've never forgotten my roots, and never will.
So what about you?

Well, I never! I realize that I am imparting my opinion towards the end of this diatribe; however, "Well to do" is so mediocre, so abysmally lower middle class. I will have you all be aware of the fact that I am quite posh: my shack is no longer condemned. I got my buddies to put stilts under it, and now it don't float as much.
My Dad was in the RAF so we lived in RAF housing until he retired. But that meant there were 9 people (2 parents, 7 kids) sharing a 4 bed house. Both Mum and Dad usually had two jobs going at a time to keep us all in food and clothes.
Dad ran a pub for about 10 years when he retired and went from having no money to being rich to going bankrupt. He always says now he knows how it felt to have money he's glad he doesn't have any.

I didn't really FGT, as the youngest I was born in Stafford, moved to Valley then when I was 5 moved to High Wycombe where we stayed til Dad retired. Still in that area now.
The rest of them moved a lot, mostly to a from Germany and Wales I think. Not sure they were ever in Norfolk.
I've got some really happy memories of RAF life too.

Late commer to this "discussion", I was born in a council house, my parents never received benefits, when my father had serious surgery in the early '50s, my mother went back to work in a mill, she had to take me and brother, 2 and 4, to the nursery, walking both ways and it wasn't round the corner. Even then, there were people in our avenue who didn't work but to label all people in council houses and/or on benefits as feckless is offensive.
As far as the RAF brats are concerned, would Germany be Gutesloh and Norfolk Mildenhall, down the road from here?
