Scottish referendum on "independence"....

As the UK as a whole is not independent, how can it grant independence? Surely this is a pointless excercise pandering to the William Wallace fraternity. Even if granted "indpendance" it will just give the Scots their own bit of the deck of the titanic that is the EU.
