Hi all, this query has nothing to do with an xword. Racking my brain for a word here that would describe in a book that where a topic is mentioned every so often it is relevant to the story and not there for salacious reasons. The word I'm looking for is the "not there for salacious reasons or rather "THERE for solacious reasons" if you know what I mean. Just doing a review of JK Rowling new book for local library. So far a male review was that it was a Jilly Cooper novel which is totally ridiculous so need this word badly. Thanks in advance.

Not sure this is quite what you are after but does "motif" help? I.e. "dominant or recurring idea in an artistic work".

you could refer to it as a "common thread"

The comment that it is Jilly Cooper is not far from the truth "Jilly Cooper for the well-educated person" being the most apt and sardonic way of putting it.
