Why is it that this year everyone has decided that the word CHRISTMAS is not to be used? It is the birth of Jesus, and also a time for tradition. Now everyone wants to say happy holiday's, which leaves me cold. I don't think it has anything to do with religion, it is the way it has been for hundred's of years.

I think "happy holidays" is more of an Americanism, where they naturally lump Thanksgiving in with it, as the two dates are so close.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (unless that may offend the chinese who celebrate new year in January of course). AND, before anyone jumps down my throat, I think the Chinese New Year celebrations are ace and much better than just getting drunk in the pub and doing very bad karaoke before snogging complete strangers just because a clock chimes!

its been made into this type of festival by shops and the great commerical way of today, and you say its the birth of jesus, have you seen much in the cities decorations proclaiming this, snowmen, animals, everything under the sun so really that is the reason I would rather there was a winter feast as in pagan days which we're near to now and that the churches feast is kept such as festivals during the year, its because these feasts which were red letter days in the past and kept as christian festivals that they continued to be bank holidays. the christmas spirit alas as been said is mostly out of a bottle. Having been a few weeks ago to Bethlehem and to see the 25ft wall around that town I doubt if there will be much rejoicing and christmas is all about the Prince of peace and the angels message peace... long may christmas remain for everyone

I think the "Happy Holidays" thing comes from America where it is used as to include Jews who celebrate Hannucha (or however you spell it) at this time of the year and for obvious reasons dont celebrate Christmas. Stupid over sensitivity if you ask me - in the US you cant say mixed race anymore - its bi-racial. These things never come from the people it is suppose to avoid offending - just silly white liberals.

You seem to be using a very peculiar and idiosyncratic meaning of the word "everyone". It's a bit like saying "all spiders have fifteen legs" or "Ann Widdecombe is the higfhest mountain in the world" or "windows are not the only fruit".

My understanding, from Christians, is that Christ was born some time in the Autumn, so actually Christmas is not the birth of Jesus at all. Agreed it's a tradition but I understand its roots are actually Pagan rather than Christian. The elusive "PC brigade" might have decided that they would prefer to have more inclusive Winter Celebrations instead of Christmas ones, but I'm not aware of the so-called PC brigade imposing that naming convention on others. I think it's been overhyped. I'm aware of celebrations being called Winter Celebrations and lights being called Festive lights etc. but so what? Has anyone at all been banned from using the word Christmas to describe a Christmas celebration?

Christmas has been tacked onto the traditional winter Pagan festival in exactly the same way Easter was hijacked (eggs for fertility, bunny rabbits for sex - dates decided by the moon for goodness sake). Religions come and go - but I don't really think (or care not to believe) anybody could take offense at being wished "Merry Christmas"
