Well due to rising utility bills, and his kids are nearly grown up, OH and I are seriously thinking about getting a van to live in. Sell the contents of the house to equip the van and become nomads. We have thought it through and talked it over for days.....months even and it is becoming more of a probability.

I think if you are considering it then you're the right sort of people to be doing it, as it's clearly not for everyone, but I would certainly give it a go, I think it would be fun, liberating and a good experience. you can generally park anywhere short term, it's long term people get leary about I think.
We have a motor home, the longest we have been away in it is 3.5 weeks, we travelled through a lot of France. We love it but I do get twitchy about going home. We stay on camp sites that have showers and washing machines some of the time and on Aires that are a lot cheaper with less facilities. Worse part is toilet emptying every other day.
We have done the boating thing as well. Took our boat over to France for 3 months, brilliant. French rivers do not have toilet emptying faciilities though.
In UK marinas have pump out stations that empty your holding tanks. In France you have to convert to a sea toilet and flush it straight into the river yuk!! If it was me I would rent your house and try it for a year. Best of luck in what you decide to do.

Met a couple in Spain a couple of years ago doing exactly that. The had let their house and just hit the road. They'd been all over Europe and were loving it.
They were coming back to the UK a couple of times a year to see family and get the 'van MOTed and insured. Insurance on the van was quite specialist they told me. European health card was useful as well.
By letting the house they had somewhere to come back to when they either go fed up or to infirm to carry on.
