I've just quit Sky TV. Had a small bill to pay. Sent them a cheque. Got a letter back saying "We don't take cheques. We've destroyed yours". What is my legal position hee?

Hi Hornchurch

A cheque is not legal tender only cash is.
The only way I sugest is to make a credit or debit card payment or to give a friend cash and ask them to do it on your behalf.
Some shops local to me do not take cheques.
Question Author
on that basis, credit/debit cards are not legal tender, either. right?
no they're not legal tender, just a methods of payment. The supplier is free to choose what methods of payment they accept.
Cheques are being phased out by lots of companies. Just ring them up and pay by debit card. Only cash is really legal tender and evn that within certain limitations. The legal tender thing though is not really the point here.
Your legal position would appear to be one of debtor at the moment.
send the bill in coins!!
cash is not 'legal' tender either

douglas, i find it hard to argue against that! thank you to all those who have replied.
>"cash is not 'legal' tender either"

I thought it was, but only up to certain amounts for certain coins- e.g. something like 20 pence for 1p coins
Many have fallen into that trap trt, coins have rules about the quantity, not sure of the amounts but any more than a couple of quid in copper and it's not legal tender. ojread can you explain why cash is not legal tender?
