Carry dog on motorcycle

I am thinking of buying a small bike/scooter/moped and wanted to know if I would be allowed to carry my small dog in an appropriate carrier and properly restrained on the back. Is this legal?

Oh thanks Nibble! I thought it was going to be an American thing but it says dog must be under 8kg and cannot be used when raining! Wonder what happens if you set out in the dry and it starts to rain?
