Northern Hemisperism in USians
45 Answers
Why are people from the USA so often prone to referring to time periods in seasonal terminology?
Surely they realise that referring to " the summer of 2011" is ridiculously ambiguous in a global sense yet even journalists will persist with using such expressions when posting online.
I don't see this kind of ignorance from people in other parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

Perhaps not yet.
And don't get me started about referring to citizens of the USA as Americans. There are many out countries where Americans live. It is yet another example of the navel gazing attitudes of that country.

According to Wiki-
American(s) may refer to:
* -A person or attribute of one of the nations of the Americas
*- Americans, citizens or attributes of or from the United States of America
See also: Citizenship in the United States, Names for United States citizens
* - The indigenous peoples of the Americas
* - A person of American ethnicity
Surely,whether or not the latter 2 categories decide to identify themselves as "Americans" is up to them-whether they be Brazilian,Peruvian, or Mexican. If all of South America defined itself as "American",would that make you happy? They don't as they prefer to define themselves by individual country/ethnicity-which may be as it should be.

So you don't understand that when an American (sorry 'Usian') or Briton (sorry 'Ukian') says "It happened last Summer" he means the season of Summer in the US or England ? He should say "in June, July or August" lest someone in South Africa thinks he means the months of Summer there?
Do you think this is a practice peculiar to the United States? We all do it; an Australian or South African would do it too; since we are referring to the time of year for us, the season,and not the particular month.
