In 40 years or more "soaked" in and by the medical fraternity, I have never heard of ante-natal depression.

Post natal depression....YES.

So, what is the difference between depression during pregnancy and ante natal depression?

OR....has ante natal depression joined the band of "yuppie" diseases?

Maybe, just maybe, some research boffin has investigated hormone and chemical changes in rats and linked it tenuously to humans?
More information needed.

Sqad...I got sick several times a day, everyday, until the day I gave birth. Add to that the complications (non existent in the end) that I went through. Kick charts, daily monitoring, weekly scans...

Very depressing. But I would call it very very low.
I lost loads of weight as well. The day I gave birth I was the same weight as the day I got pregnant.
A little CPD for you Sqad ;-)
Nice issued guidance about antenatal depression back in 2007. Please follow this link for more info and a further link to the full guidelines: http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/CG45
Or even better the guidance in PDF format: http://www.nice.org.u...11004/30433/30433.pdf
Hello my love.

NoM....darling...good morning...see we have sara 3 back? That she liven things up a bit......
Semantics Sqad! Just as people no longer say 'depression following childbirth' the title of antenatal depression has evolved since 'depression during pregnancy'.

sq.......I think that I have got it....so, if they were not pregnant and then became depressed it would be called.... depression.

So it is the pregnancy that has caused the depression..............is that it?

sq....take no notice of me, it is Sunday and i am bored....not depressed,......just bored.
I guess for some women/girls, the fact they got pregnant when they didn't mean to must also be a huge burden - it happens, so no comments about "they should have known better", please
Crikey Sqad - even the GP Registrars I teach are not this challenging! Must be a reflection on how medicine is taught these days?!
Consider yourself duly ignored ;-)
I wonder also, when you consider the hard times generally being endured in the UK, that as a bump becomes more evidently a real baby that will be there any moment, the enormous consequences also kick in.
When I was having my first there was also a lot of media coverage of suspected child abuse - was it in Middlesborough where loads of kids were removed from their homes overnight? - and this really got me down.
So maybe our mad 24-hours shock-horror media coverage helps get women down at this time in their lives.
