If you had a house with a mortgage in the second world war and it got destroyed
was there any compensation/write off of the mortgage or was it just tough and you
had a mortgage on a big pile of bricks ?

No idea, but what a good question, hope you get an answer.

Dave.
My father bought a house in London for £200 at the end of the war, but it had some bomb damage. The government gave him a grant of £200 to repair it.
I think there was a great deal of emergency re-housing, plus squatting in empty property, plus the people in the hardest hit zones were most likely to be renting anyway. How landlords were compensated would be interesting to find out.
Brilliant link Dundurn.
I think we also need to remember the relatively low cost of property back then as well.
