c - m - t - o - l - r, so presumably COMPTROLLER, comprehensive = COMP, but searcher = TROLLER seems a bit loose. Any thoughts?

I think your answer's right but I share your unease with troller. Chambers gives 'to fish for' under troll, so probably okay.

I thought it was to 'trawl' through data? Still, I put Comptroller as the answer! Clue perhaps should have said 'sounds like' etc.
