After many years of honouring various 'silences' over the years whilst at work, mainly Remembrance Sunday but also the World Trade Centre marks of respect and I'm sure others, I decided on a new tactic today at 11am to avoid the usual 'are you serving' or 'do you have a toilet?' during said commemorative moment.
I put a notice on the door at work saying that we were honouring the 2 minute silence as a mark of respect and would be opening at 11.02. How many people do you think knocked on the door and pointed to their watch as 5 of us stood on the inside of the door in silence?

correct mamya, noone, several people were at the door but i think we made such a striking but small impact they stood there and paused with us, the first time i have seen anything quite so in unison since the silence they held for Diana just after her death, can't imagine why i have never tried that before, usually there is always someone to desperate to buy their daily mail they interupt.

I don't work Sundays, but at the store where I work, apparently the two minutes silence was perfectly observed by all customers. Well done to Asda Horwich!

Last year I tried to oversee the two minutes silence, informing colleagues and customers. We locked the delivery gates and put a note up. The whole store managed silence, but the Polish driver at the back gate could not read and spent what seemed like hours buzzing to get in. Why can't companies relay important information to their workers?
