Does the word "suicide" have religious origins ... as opposed to using the phrase 'taking one's own life'?

No. It means self killing. just as homicide means man-killing, fratricide means brother-killing etc etc. The church might think it invented Latin, but it didn't.

I don't think so. It is simply Latin for "self killing".
