bad directsound driver - please help

I recently had to re-install windows XP, and now apparently i don't have any sound. Whenever i try to play something in winamp it says "Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078". I know practically nothing about computers so I don't know what to do. I heard i needed a driver for my sound card but i don't know which one i have really, or where to get it. i tried downloading the new directx stuff from microsoft and it didnt help me. pleaaaaaase help me!

same thing happened to me, after a reinstall no sound.This worked for me try to download soundmax you can find it on the web but it is not easyso keep trying , its a good general purpose prog ,,, good luck
