Driving Through A Red Light

This morning I got to a set of traffic lights at the end of a dual carriageway, where the speed limit is 40mph - as I was approaching the lights, they went amber, and I judged that I wouldn't be able to stop before the line if I was going to stop. I only saw the lights in the amber stage, so they hadn't turned red before they went out of sight...I've been worried since though that if they had changed to red as I literally drove past the lights that I will have been caught by the red light camera. If so, how long should I expect to wait to get something though the post?

You may pass an amber light if it appears after you have crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to pull up might cause an accident.

For any proceedings, you, or the registered keeper of the vehicle, must be sent a written notice within 14 days. Since 1994 this does not mean that you must receive it within that time. The notice is no longer sent by recorded delivery, but by first class post.

U would have noticed a flash if there was actually a camera present. Going through a red light carries a hefty fine and a points.

Was there actually a camera at the lights?

Good luck!

Yes that particular set of lights does have a camera. I didn't notice a flash. I agree with you mdoo - I had slowed down, but maybe not enough - I was pretty close to the lights, so unless I was was going really slow I wouldn't have been able to stop before the line. I'm quite a paranoid person so hopefully I'm just making it seem worse than it was!

Hi,

The camera will only take a photo if you went through a red traffic light, if the traffic light was showing amber as you crossed the white line you are in the clear.

Don't forget though if you had an accident by going through an Amber light you would be partly to blame.
