Pumps in the airing cupboard.

Both pumps in the airing cupboard are very hot to the touch.
Earlier there was a buzzing noise coming from the tank but I have put the heating on and it has stopped.

Should the pumps be hot.

They are pumping hot water so I'd expect them to be hot.

Pumps pumping hot water will be hot. the buzzing will be your immersion heater. when the central heating was turned on and the tank full of water gets hot, the imm heater will switch off.

It would be quite normal for a Hot Water pump to get hot, for obvious reasons, but assuming the other is for cold, then it should only warm slightly under load.

For the cold ump to overheat, I can only think that the immersion cylinder has far too much hot water, and this has expanded into the roof tank (from where I'm assuming the cold pump is fed.)

Turning on the heating has maybe allowed the excess heat in the water to dissipate.
This is all assumption, since I don't know the type of system you have. Possibly boiler thermostat gone faulty (on the HW side)

I used to be married to a plumber/gas heating engineer so haven't a clue about central heating. I will run some hot water off and see if it improves.

If your immersion heater is on, switch it off - you don't need it if your boiler is heating the hot water, and it eats electricity.
