Lays do you buy trousers online for your men?

I want to buy some trousers online for my brother and what confuses me is the trouser size ie. 36 r and 36 l.

Apparently the "R" and the "L" stand for regular and long but what size is r and l? I don't want to buy the trousers and buy "R" and find they're too short.

What size inside leg is "R"? What exactly is regular?

You'd have to contact the supplier I think. I always buy long for myself but sometimes they come up to short, especially M&S, next tend to be OK. Usually there will be a size guide on the website to give you an idea.

That all depends on the website concerned. Regular is usually 32" inside leg, long can be anything from 34" upwards.

Thanks rockracoon they have a guide but is very unhelpful and doesn't give the actual length. Thanks daffy654 i think i'll go with long then as he can always roll them up.

It will say on the website - don't guess, it means different things to different manufacturers.

Most manufacturers will use a 32" leg length as their Regular size. Short is normally 2" shorter (30"), and long is 2" longer (34"). However, other manufacturers base Regular on a 31" leg length, but maintain the 2" differences for Short (29") and Long (33). It's all a case of knowing which Regular sizing a particular retail store stocks.

Bought my husband a new suit from Debenhams last week. He has a 36 waist and R leg is 29 1/2".

Trousers really have to be tried on - you can't buy them on line in my opinion.
