Digital SLR Camera lenses?

Are the lenses that work along with SLR cameras all standard fitting? So can I just buy a, item called a digital slr lens and know that it will fit any slr camera?

Some of the M42 lenses you can find (in charity shops/car boot sales) have fantastic optical quality for a fraction of the price. I've been doing a lot of searching recently and am really interested in this area. Hence the response.
Manual focussing all the time can be fiddly but you can buy adaptors that have a 'focus confirmation' chip attached that will beep on your DSLR when in focus.
Latest acquisition: Mint 50mm 1.4 Takumar SMC for 30 quid at a car boot sale including a Pentax Spotmatic 35mm SLR :-)
