Just put a job application in, but not too sure...

So I went in to apply at the local iron works building about an hour ago. I put my friend (who works there) as a reference. I handed it directly to the manager, but he did not look interested at ALL. He looked like he was going to throw it away without even reading it. I don't know if this is a good sign, especially when the only official job experience I have is dishwashing and prep cook. I included a full page of references and some stuff about me being in manufacturing and welding classes throughout high school, salvaging vehicles, cleaning metal, etc. and a list of things about me, such as: being punctual, making work my first priority when in the work area, that I'm quick to learn new things with a good teacher/supervisor, that I'll do whatever is needed to be done, etc. Stuff like that. Do you think I have a good chance? How long do you think I should wait before I go in to follow up?

I know being a dishwasher and a prep cook doesn't exactly qualify me for the job, but it's some thing I'd love to do. Since high school, I've loved working with metal. That's why I took more than one metal shop class during school. Plus, I always help my dad with cleaning metal, junking out cars, and all that fun stuff. I can't be a dishwasher forever, so I think it's time to move to something better.
Oh no, my friend said that they need people bad and that they're really short-staffed. I don't think there's an issue with that. He got his other friend in there as well, and he said that he's positive he'll hire me.... But I don't know. Maybe I'm a little more paranoid than I should be for it having not even been a day yet.
Are you in the U.S. not that it matters, just interested?
Looking for jobs with limited qualifications can be tough. You will really have to sell yourself, make them think they would be fools not to employ you. It's a numbers game too, the more you put out, the more chance of a response. Go for as many no's as you can get, every now and then you'll get a yes which will keep you going.

Sometimes Managers manage to do very little. I translate the look he gave you as, ' I am only here to earn a salary for doing as little as possible and you have come in here and expect me to do some work, go away, I have a job and you don't, hah hah! '
On the other hand he might just have been peed off seeing the 430th applicant for a job that they were not qualified for. Are you still working in a kitchen? Try for a NVQ in catering and hospitality and get qualifications that way. Kitchens are hot but I think that an Ironworks would be hotter.

Was there a Person Specification or other list of essential and desirable requirements for the job setting out required skills, qualifications, experience and other attributes, and how closely did you match them.
Did you include a covering letter showing how you matched all the requirements and were the ideal candidate. If not, I hope your keenness gets you though but it's normally not enough as there may be hundreds of applicants for such a role.
