Liposuction treatments on the rise
7 Answers
Liposuction is the third most popular type of plastic surgery according to new figures, with more people choosing to undergo the surgery last year than ever before. This means that it is the 3rd most popular procedure after breast implants and eyelid surgery.
However surgeons have warned that it is not an effective method of dealing with obesity or weight loss. 3,986 liposuction procedures were carried out last year, up nearly 90% on 2005.
What do you think of this increasing acceptance of liposuction as a 'solution' to people's weight problem?

If the people undergoing the surgery are going to turn their lives around afterwards and start eating healthily, looking after themselves, I see it as a good thing. But I suspect the majority of people having the procedure will just revert back to their old ways and this is not good for your body.

Ours whole lives these days are 'buy now, pay later'.
Luxury items have become basic necessities ie. dishwashers, tumbledryers, cars etc
When we compare our lifestyles to only, say, 30 years ago we should be shocked at our dependency on 'labour saving devices'.
Add to this the media exposure of say footballers, and levelling of social classes (in the past people never expected to 'better' themselves). Everyone now feels entitled to their 5 mins of fame, hence the number of reality-shows.
The knock on effect has made us lazy and vain, we are all victims of our buoyant economy.
Instead of walking, we drive.
Our food is cheap, and we buy ready meals.
Exercise is too time consuming, so over the years we have seen various 'skams' regarding slimming tablets, exercise beds etc. Now they can suck our fat out, problem solved!
Personally I do think that liposuction will increase, but no, I dont think it should be as accepted as a solution. Any weight put on after the procedure just goes to another part of your body. It is only a quick fix, I fully expect in say 20 years time for the litigators to be busy suing what is left of the medical profession, when they realise the fat has attached itself to vital organs!

I think it's good for morbidly obese people as long as it is used in conjunction with a healthy eating and change of lifestyle plan. Otherwise the reason they got that way in the first place is not going to change as that's usually down to something else going off inside their heads.
And personally I would not be adverse to a little suction here and there if I could afford it but in this instance I would agree with Miss Inquiry and say I was just being lazy.
